It is good to see that the CW stations are becoming more popular. In
last month's log file I noticed morse logs from other people than the
regular bunch. Great; keep those logs coming folks!

Please note that we intend to mail the next newsletter
before Christmas, so if you have anything for the
December issue, please send it to us before the 15th!!

For those who are interested; Bletchley Park has a website at

* GOLDEN OLDIE *
When I was browsing thru old recordings, I found a 1981 recording of a
numbers station. Unfortunately I didn't record the complete broadcasts
in those days, nor did I jot down essentials as freq, date, and time.
Anyway, the transmission starts with a piano piece followed by a Slavic
male voice 515 515 05 826 826 05 515 +5x5FG 826 +5x5FG.

Can anyone tell me what station this is? It could be an early version
of Czech intel station S10.

* MORSE STATIONS *

::: M26 - '98' updated profile
The station transmits irregularly with a speed of 10 WPM, and can
easily be recognized because of its typical messages. The messages
mostly started with '98' in the past but during its active periods
in 1997 and last October most messages started with '99'. Other
numbers were also copied, the majority in the 90's.

Format 1: (used before 1997)
98 + several 5FG, continually. The first groups in the various
messages often start with the same figure(s). The final group is
almost always 11111, but other groups of the same figures have
been noted (55555 and 22222). Sometimes the station sends endless
   '98 98 98' for hours.

   Example:
   98 12744 13111 11111
   98 07802 13111 11111
   98 04742 11111 11111

Format 2: (used during October 1998, but also noted in 1997)
99 + one 5FG. The 5FG changes regularly. Before the next message
appears, the station transmits series of 99's varying from 1 to
5 minutes. Note the '95 12345' sequence. This is probably a test
   message as it returns regularly.

   Example:
   99 10528
   99 99 99 99 99
   99 10500
   99 99 99 99 99
   95 12345
   99 99 99 99 99
   95 10510
   99 99 99 99 99
   99 10520

Every now and then groups of messages are being transmitted. The
messages start with various 2-figure groups. The station repeats
each xx xxxxx many times, then goes to next. When it transmitted
all the messages plus a test message, it returns to the first one
   and starts all over again.

   Example:
   99 20388
   95 12345
   32 30356
   99 10826
   then repeats
   99 20388
   95 12345
   etc etc

Besides the above mentioned types of messages, I copied the following
   in October:

   92 31
   31 31 31 + various 5FGs
   34 34 34 + various 5FGs
   32 32 32 + various 5FGs
   34 34 34 + various 5FGs
   99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99
   99 20338

Freqs: 2379 2961 3153 3146 3159 4106 4439 4442 4445
5171 5196 kHz, always on two parallel frequencies.
       October 1998 freqs: 4106 // 2961 kHz
So far all freqs were found in the 2,3,4 and lower 5 MHz
       bands (5100-5200). 2961 kHz is a regular since 1995.

Who, what, where???
I still have no clue....... The station was df'ed during its latest
active period, but the time was too short for a good fix. So, what do
we have?

Df from Gotland, Sweden: one hop NW Germany or two hops: SE England
Df from Holland: Goteborg, Sweden
Df from midwest Germany: due west (= Netherlands or S England)
Latvia sez: pretty sure that it comes from my west.

It is suggested that the station might be one of the RN Schools of
Signals in SE England, possibly Portsmouth, Plymouth or London.

!!!!! Your comments and info are of course more than welcome !!!!!

::: M63. "A2A" has settled down on its winter freqs and times. The daily
morning transmission is now at 0600 UTC (presumably the same local time
as summer, as most of Europe went off Daylight Saving a couple of weeks
ago) on 3393 and 4313 kHz, the net replying on 3183 kHz. At that time
3393 kHz is quite weak in the UK, and presumably inaudible outside
Europe; 4313 kHz is fairly strong. (tnx JD)

Guy Denman informs us about the new skeds for M29 and M53:
::: M29 is on 4540 kHz at 1800 UTC and 4460 kHz at 2000 UTC
::: M29B is on 5810 kHz at 1300 UTC
::: M29B is on 5911 kHz at 1330 UTC

Locations:
::: M23 transmits on 11350 kHz from Syracuse, Italy
This station probably transmits from other locations as well.

::: POLYTONE STATION [XPH]
Can anyone tell me when the first polytone station appeared? I found a
recording from 1981 in my collection, so they are there for at least 17
years!

XPH hunter Andy Bell discovered that XPH not only changed their usual
frequencies in November, but also one of the transmission days.

XPH's morning schedules are now on Tuesdays and Fridays - they were on
Wednesdays and Fridays. Obvious frequency ID of 215. XPH also changed
their time slot to winter time.

Apparently something went wrong as the first November transmissions
were on the October frequencies. They eventually changed to a new set
of frequencies.

November morning skeds:
07.00 UTC - 11634 kHz
07.20 UTC - 12434 kHz
07.40 UTC - 14834 kHz

Andy sez ''I wonder if the station manager read his Spooks mail and
realised they hadn't changed frequencies''

Andy continues.... ''tuned in for XPH this morning (Tue, 17 Nov 98) on
the November frequencies. However the 0720z transmission went out on
13434 kHz and not 12434 kHz as expected.''

* JAMMERS *
During the Cold War era, the Radio Free Europe directed transmissions
to East Block countries (from the Munich area), which were heavily
jammed with fluctuating multi-tone machine-sounding modulation. The RFE
transmitted the same program (various reports, news, DJ music, etc) on
different SW bands, such as 16,19, 25, 31, 41, 49m SW (it was announced
as this). The bands used were different during the day, night, winter,
summer. However, it became known, that there is always 1 frequency,
where the program is not jammed. So with a little fiddling with the
buttons, one could find a clear transmission (I have checked out this
myself, and it was true). The reason of leaving 1 frequency not jammed
was (known as) the local authorities wanted to tape and listen in the
programs, too! From time to time the jammers transmitted an id marker
in morse. [thanks for the info, AC]

Note: I mentioned Rimantas Pleikys' book "Jamming" before. He describes
these stations extensively. A list of the markers and their locations
can be found in his book.

* VOICE STATIONS *

::: ENGLISH MAN VARIANT
Eddy Waters found a rare English Man transmission. The transmission
follows the normal structure of an English Man message, but is followed
by several data bursts and a morse message. This station actually waits
for feedback from the recepient!

The complete message was in English 874 874 874 901 901 54 54 -into 54
5FGs- 901 901 54 54 00000, followed by a few bursts of data and the
following in morse: 7SA1 QSA 4I K -pause- R K

Besides Eddy's log, I have only seen two earlier logs for this station,
both loged by Enigma's Mike.
10440 1230 UTC 14 Nov. 1998
13572 1900 UTC 23 April 1995
 6915 2200 UTC 28 April 1995

Mike sez that the messages on both days were the same: 572 572 572 861
861 54 54. Ending: 861 861 54 54 00000 + data + CW.

Apparently the station has a standard group count of 54.

The question is whether this English Man is the same as E6 or not?! It
is of course possible that the station has been logged many times in
the recent past, but that it has been mis-reported as E6. So, I'd like
to ask you to listen to the English Man transmissions very carefully.
Don't switch your radio off after '00000' but wait a minute or two and
see if the data and morse part appears.

::: ENGLISH MAN [E6]
Intersting info reached us via John Maky. He copied the English Man on
6865 at 0130 on 22 Nov. with "936 then 782 782 194 914 and into 5FGx2".
Down at :07 w/782 782 64 64 00000. Recently these broadcasts have taken
on a new twist - they use the same frequency more than twice.

The station was also on 4630 kHz at 0400 on 22 Nov. Repeating "347 then
592 592 64 64 and into 5FGx2". Down at :16 w/592 592 64 64 00000. Repeat
of previous night's broadcast.
When audio dropped, a second weaker broadcast could be heard on the
carrier repeating 329 329 329 00000, which is a repetition of the 0415
broadcast from 22 Nov. on 9216 kHz.

Very nice catch, John!

ENIGMA's Mike found the English Man on a new frequency:
4470 kHz at 2200 UTC. Preamble 534. Ending 218 77 00000 at 2218 UTC

::: SWEDISH RHAPSODY [G2/M4]

The following info was provided by Guy Denman:

The G2/M4 station is having some major changes just lately, it has gone
from having a large number of skeds to having very few. Most of these
seem to be during the day. M4 Is now only on the second week of the
month on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the following times and
frequencies: 1000 on 7250, 1200 on 8188, and 1300 on 5748. The same IDs
and message sent all week.

Another really major change occured recently. I heard G2 on Monday same
times as last Month, 1000 on 6200, 1200 on 8188, and 1300 on 6507. All
transmissions were on SSB with 3 playings of the Swedish Rhapsody, then
a count 1 to 0. IDs were 65069 12876 49906.

An English transmission was heard at 1000 on 6200 with a 1-0 count.
Each figure was repeated 5 times this for 5 minutes. There was no SR
tune. It then went on to the same IDs as Monday 65069 12786 49906 each
repeated twice, the whole repeated 3 times. Then without a pause 65069
twice then 100x5F, no pause at the end 12876 twice 100x5F then 49906
twice 100x5F. No ending. There were no attention or end as in G2, and
no pauses anywhere. The voice sounds very much like E5 the counting
station.

::: THE COUNTING STATION [E5/V5]
by Chris Smolinski <cps@access.digex.net>

::::: "The CIA, a training center, nuclear war, :::::
::::: a woman named Cynthia, and an old farm..." :::::

An interesting mix, certainly! What do they all have in common? Why a
Spy Numbers Stations, of course.

Many of us are familiar with The Counting Station (TCS, ENIGMA E5/V5).
This station is also referred to as Cynthia (CynthIA), and that is the
nickname given to the woman's voice who calls out the digits. This is
the numbers station that most believe to be associated with the US
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Transmissions from this station have
been heard for years. Originally, the transmissions were of four figure
(4FG) groups, they then changed over to using the 3/2FG format, which
is a five figure group with a slight pause between the third and fourth
digits.

The original technique used to produce the audio for TCS is rather
interesting. The message to be sent was punched on a 5 bit (baudot)
teletype tape. This tape was fed into a device that played a mylar
cylinder that had a number of audio tracks recorded on it - the same
basic technique as is still used today to store the soundtrack of a
movie. This device selected one of the audio tracks, which consisted of
the digits 0-9, and other words like "count" and "end". This audio was
fed to the transmitter. Presumably other numbers stations used similiar
systems. In fact, listeners used to report hearing clicks between the
digits, perhaps this is the machine switching over between tracks.

Then in 1985 a change was made. A computer was introduced that had
digitized audio recordings. As before, messages could be entered via
teletype tape, or they could be typed in on a keyboard. A schedule of
transmissions could be set up, and the system was automated.

Interestingly, some people have reported numbers stations sending
strings of "46464646". This of course is the numeric equivilent of the
codes for RYRYRYRY, which is a common RTTY test message. It's possible
that someone fed a test tape into the computer, rather than the correct
message tape.

And on Friday, Novmeber 6, 1998, at 0200 UTC TCS was heard sending a
message to ID "000". The first five groups of the message were:
            000 00 987 65 432 10 987 65 432 10
Then seemingly random numbers followed. An interesting test message.
The message length was 215, which is a fairly common length. Some
believe that messages with this count are all test messages.

And where are Counting Station broadcasts transmitted from? Well, from
signal reports it appears that numerous sites worldwide are used. It is
known that some transmissions originate from the USA - right outside of
Washington, DC in fact. They come from a site in rural Virginia, about
an hours drive southwest of Washington. Originally, it was thought that
they came from a military base called "Vint Hill Farms", near Warrenton,
Virgina. As it turns out, while Vint Hill was used for intelligence
purpose, it was as an interception site, for training, and equipment
design and testing, not for spy numbers transmitting. Vint Hill Farms
has since been closed down.

They are tranmitted from Site C of the "Warrenton Traing Center" (WTC).
What is the Warrenton Training Center? Well, the little sign outside
the gate says it is part of the National Communication System (NCS).
Officially, the NCS is an agency which facilitates communications
between various parts of the US government. It was founded in 1962,
after the Cuban Missile Crisis. In particular, it is supposed to make
sure that the government continues to have communications in the event
of a nuclear war.

In reality, many believe the NCS is purely a cover for the CIA. There
are some official exercises and programs that claim to show participation
with the NCS, but the CIA is really running the show. One of the many
parts of the NCS is the Warrenton Training Center, a collection of four
sites in rural Virginia, near the town of Warrenton. These sites are
referred to by letter, A through D.

I've driven around the perimeter of these sites. It's just a short
drive from Washington, and if you're ever in the area, you should give
it a try. All of the sites are just off of state routes, so you don't
have to drive on too many back country roads.

Station A is a small facility used for meetings and conferences.

Station B is the primary training facility for the Office of Communi-
cation. This consists of basic training in morse code, radio theory,
and so on. Training for the Department of State is also conducted at
this site. (The close cooperation between diplomatic and intelligence
branches of governments of course goes back thousands of years).

Station C is the transmitter site. This site houses the shortwave
transmitters and antennas. It has a microwave link to Station D.

Station D is where the messages actually originate. There is also a
microwave tower in Tysons Corner, Virgina, which acts as a link between
the Warrenton stations and CIA headquarters. There is also an under-
ground fiber optic line that runs from the Warrenton sites back to
Washington DC.

The messages sent consist of both real "live" and dummy traffic. The
purpose of course of dummy traffic is to make it difficult to determine
when the agent is actually receiving messages. Usually, a simple system
is used to let the agent know when a message is real or not. This
usually consists of a code, such as if the middle digit is odd, the
message is dummy. This lets the agent immediately know that the message
isn't real. The same message is repeated several times on different
frequencies over several days, all according to a set schedule. This is
to allow an agent to receive messages he may have missed. Short messages
are padded with extra groups to bring them up to a minimum level.
Schedules are arranged with the agents during meetings with their case
officer.

If you'd like to try for a Counting Station QSL card, you may want to
give this address a shot. No one ever has received one, and no one
probably will. You might even get your name in a CIA file for trying...

And who's voice is Cynthia's? Well, sorry to disappoint you, it isn't
anyone's voice. The voice is totally synthetic. Cynthia truly is a robot.

Talking about V2....... Bob Roehrig <broehrig@admin.aurora.edu> heard
the following on Monday Nov 8 at 0400 UTC. In his own words..........

1) Caught M8 CW station on 7680 and heard Spanish numbers faintly in
the background (had the receiver in USB).

2) Went looking for any V2 stations and heard one on 6768 - thinking
that it sounded a lot like what I heard on 7680, so I switched on
receiver #2 and tuned it back to 7680. Well, it turns out that on
7681 LSB was // transmission to the AM V2 on 6768. This was defi-
nitely LSB - no carrier. I have never heard any // V2 transmissions
   before.

* TRANSPOSITION CIPHERS *
by Torbjorn Andersson <tan@telia.com>
-------------------------------------

Table of contents
  * Introduction
  * Single columnar transposition
  * Double columnar transposition

* Introduction
Transposition ciphers are rarely encountered nowadays. They differ from
both code systems and substitution ciphers; in a transposition cipher
the letters of the cleartext are shifted about to form the cryptogram.
This can be done in a number of ways and some systems exist where even
whole words are transposed, rather than individual letters. To encrypt
Chinese, for instance, one can use a transposition cipher operating on
the individual signs of written Chinese (using a substitution cipher for
a language like Chinese would be awkward if not impossible).

* Single columnar transposition
One of the easiest ways to achieve transposition is the single columnar
transposition cipher. To use it one needs a keyword or phrase, whose
letters are numbered according to their presence in the alphabet. The
keyword 'Osymandias' is numbered in the following way:

         O S Y M A N D I A S
         7 8 10 5 1 6 3 4 2 9

That is, the first occurance of the letter A is numbered 1, the second 2.
There are no B's or C's so the next letter to be numbered are the D
followed by I, and so on.

Next the cleartext are written in rows under the numbered keyword, one
letter under each letter of the keyword. Let's say that the cleartext
to be encrypted is 'Company have reached primary goal'. It will look
like this:

         O S Y M A N D I A S
         7 8 10 5 1 6 3 4 2 9
         c o m p a n y h a v
         e r e a c h e d p r
         i m a r y g o a l

Now the letters of the cleartext are copied down by reading them off
columnwise in the order stated by the enumeration of the keyword and
the result is the finished cryptogram, which - of course - are put
into groups of five letters, like this:

ACYAP LYEOH DAPAR NHGCE IORMV RMEA

To decrypt a received message enciphered by this method one first must
calculate the number of letters present in the cryptogram. This is done
to see how many letters there originally were in the last row. As can
be seen above, the last column - the one numbered 9 - only contains two
letters and this is important. Now the cryptogram above contains 29
letters and as a legitimate user of the crypto system one knows that
the keyword is ten letters wide, therefore the last row must consist
of nine letters only, the last position being empty. Keeping that in
mind - or better still, marking the last position of row three in some
way to indicate that it shouldn't be used - one numbers the keyword
letters just as when encrypting and then start by writing the first
three letters of the cryptogram under keyword letter number one, thus:

         O S Y M A N D I A S
         7 8 10 5 1 6 3 4 2 9
         . . . . a . . . . .
         . . . . c . . . . .
         . . . . y . . . . *

Continue in the same way by writing the next three letters under keyword
letter number two, and so on up to keyword letter eight, it will look
like this:

         O S Y M A N D I A S
         7 8 10 5 1 6 3 4 2 9
         c o . p a n y h a .
         e r . a c h e d p .
         i m . r y g o a l *

Now column nine follows and there only two letters should be written
as stated above (the position marked by a star being left empty). This
leaves three letters of the cryptogram, and these - of course - are
written in column ten and then the cleartext can be read in the normal
way, row by row.

Usually when employing a transposition cipher like the above, one adds
dummy letters to make the final group five letters long if it isn't
already full. It is important to do this before transposing the letters,
otherwise the receiver can't calculate the columns that haven't a full
number of letters if the last row isn't complete. In some cases the
last row is always made complete by adding dummy letters, but that
reduces the security of the cipher and isn't recommended (now, this
cipher is quite easy to break anyhow...).

* Double columnar transposition
Double columnar transposition is similar to single columnar trans-
position, but the process is repeated twice. One either uses the same
keyword both times or, preferably, a different one on the second
occasion. Let's encrypt the text 'Send armoured car to headquarters'
using the keywords 'Agamemnon' and 'Mycenae':

         A G A M E M N O N
         1 4 2 5 3 6 7 9 8
         s e n d a r m o u
         r e d c a r t o h
         e a d q u a r t e
         r s j

(Note dummy letter j added at the end to make the total number of
letters a multiple of five)

This first encryption gives: srer-nddj-aau-eeas-dcq-rra-mtr-uhe-oot.
These letters are written under the second keyword, thus:

         M Y C E N A E
         5 7 2 3 6 1 4
         s r e r n d d
         j a a u e e a
         s d c q r r a
         m t r u h e o
         o t

And, finally this gives the cryptogram:

DEREE ACRRU QUDAA OSJSM ONERH RADTT

Double columnar transposition is substatially safer against crypt-
analysis than single columnar transposition (not impossible, though).

Hi, folx, welcome to the logs.

Our log format is as follows:
FREQ c/s Station Enigma-Code rest in free format should include time,
date, mode, details and initials.

Unfortunaltely, folks are using different formats for the date. This
is very annoying to those who want to import the logs to a database.
Please use the following format: mmddyy, that is 121498 from now on.
This is the most common format for the folks on this list, so the
Europeans have to change their habit, i think :-)

Due to limited time no logs from my side this month and i also had to
exclude older logs due to limited time. I'll try to compile a supple-
ment from these older logs for inclusion in the december issue.

Please note that I can only include logs in the column which stick to
this format. In this column I include logs posted to the spooks or
WUN mailing lists or to Ary or myself privately. For a reference of
the enigma designators see n+o newsletter no.1. If you want to remain
anonymous, just send your logs to me or Ary with a note saying so.

Let's open the logbook...
